What to Expect

The first session constitutes of the intake process. This involves signing consent forms for services, gathering of important information such as history and current stressors, or symptoms affecting you, your family, or child.

Besides answering a series of questions to better understand what is occurring, you may also be asked or assisted to fill out a symptom’s questionnaire. If a minor is experiencing behaviors at school, with consent, you may be provided a form for teachers to complete in order to get a better understanding as to how to assist. Towards the end of the intake session, goals will be identified in order to design a specific plan for yourself, child, or family.

After the first session, subsequent sessions will be focused on working towards meeting your individualized and identified treatment goals via a series of therapeutic techniques. Techniques may involve, but are not limited to talk therapy, role play, in vivo exposure, relaxation methods, reflective writing, etc. Parental involvement is encouraged and appreciated with young children and minors.

Consistency in attendance for scheduled follow up visits are expected as it is crucial for the progress. Also, participation in therapy homework activities are highly encouraged as they increase the probability of successful treatment.

Treatment can last anywhere from a few weeks to a few years, however average is about 3 months. When beginning treatment, sessions may be scheduled weekly, twice weekly (if risk of harm is present or crisis), bi weekly, or as discussed with clinical staff following the treatment plan. As treatment and goals are met, sessions are then moved to occur bi-weekly, every 3 weeks, and so on until case is closed.
